September 26th-29th

Welcome back Oasis Bighorns!

Here's what will be going on in our classroom this week:

Projects: We are starting a new unit on ecosystems. Major ideas that students will be learning about include: the cycling of matter in an ecosystem, the interactions of living and nonliving things in an ecosystem, and what happens when a population in an ecosystem changes. Students will be working with many online resources and models to help illustrate these ideas.

Writing: We have completed our informative essays on the Electoral College. I'm so proud of my students. This was a difficult task for them but they worked through it! This week, we will be completing a shorter writing task in which students will explain a series of 10 unwritten rules about a topic. We will be looking at some mentor texts to help give us some ideas. This will be a great opportunity for students to add some of their voice and use domain-specific words in their writing. I can't wait to read their final 10 rules by the end of the week! Also, we will be reviewing types of writing and discussing how our purpose for writing should match the writing mode.

Language Arts: Students will continue to work in IXL to catch up on some topics.

Reading: We will continue to read through our text Two Miserable Presidents. Last week, students made predictions and studied vocabulary that would help with comprehension of the text. I'm excited to start our book circle so we can read and discuss our first section of the book titled "How to Rip a Country Apart".

HOMEWORK: Please remember to have your child read and summarize each night on their reading logs. Reading grades are being affected because there is no reading log being turned in or it is being turned in incomplete. Students are asked to read nightly to help with their fluency, accuracy, and vocabulary. The purpose of the summary on the reading log is to make sure that students are comprehending the text.

PLEASE LOG ON TO CLASS DOJO TO VIEW PICTURES OF STUDENTS HARD AT WORK IN CLASS.
