Jan. 30th-Feb. 2nd

Projects: This week students will finish their culminating project which is a group magazine on the 1920s. Students will also be taking a vocabulary quiz with terms we've practiced during this unit and finally students will be completing a final essay test in which they describe various aspects of the 1920s.

8th Writing: Students are working on a sample narrative task from the Nevada Department of Education website. As a whole class, students read through two narrative examples and we annotated them looking specifically for narrative techniques such as pacing, descriptive details, and figurative language. Finally, using the sample narratives as examples, students will be drafting a narrative in which a character takes a journey. Students are a bit nervous with this prompt because they are being asked to write descriptively but I am confident that together we can do it!

6th Writing: Students are working on a sample narrative task from the Nevada Department of Education website. As a whole class, students read through two examples that describe the disappearance of the ship the Mary Celeste. Students will then be drafting a narrative in which they will describe the final hours aboard the ship before the mysterious disappearance of the crew.

Reading: Students are working on making inferences as well as creating a written response to literature. Students will read a passage on their own and make inferences based on text evidence. Finally, we will be reviewing non-fiction reading strategies by reading and discussing a passage about WWI and The Great Depression.

REMINDERS:
Please make sure that your child is reading the same book every night and summarizing. The expectation is that students write approximately three sentences or more that summarizes clearly what they read and use correct capitalization and punctuation.

We will be celebrating Valentine's Day this year at Oasis Academy. I'm excited for students to get this opportunity. Students may bring 20 Valentines or candy treats if they wish. Please just have your child write his or her name on the valentine card or treat so that they are passed out quickly.
