Jan. 9th-12th

Happy 2017 Bighorn families!
I hope everyone had a wonderful and restful time over the holidays. Here's what's going on in our classroom this week:

Projects: We are working on our unit on the Roaring 20s. Students will review vocabulary of the time period as well as watch short videos of the time period each day. In addition, students will begin working collaboratively on their group project which will be a magazine depicting the social, economical, and political aspects of the time period.

8th Writing: Students are working on finishing their personal narratives of a memorable setting-based event. We will review story elements to help with our next writing assignment which will be an imaginative narrative. It is important for students to plan out their stories ahead of time so that they have a clear direction for the plot of their stories.

Writing: Sixth graders are working on finishing their personal narratives. I still have a few students who haven't turned in their argumentative paper so they will have to work on it during study hall.

Language Arts: We are working on possessive pronouns in IXL. In addition, we are reviewing roots that we studied first semester. This week we are reviewing the root "man" which means hand. Students received a word list which we will review daily in class and hopefully take a quiz on these words next week.

Reading: This week students are working on finishing their World War 1 pyramid projects. We are also working on making inferences and explaining the what the text states explicitly. Sometimes students confuse making inferences, which is using text clues and prior knowledge to come up with an inference or conclusion and making predictions which is making an educated guess on how what will happen in later events in a story.

REMINDERS:
* Please make sure your child is completing their nightly reading and summarizing on the reading log.
